It was perhaps founded in the first half of the 12th century as a fortress on a limestone rock overlooking the Elbe river. When Poděbrady was ranked among the royal estates, a stone castle was built here. The castle was newly rebuilt and fortified during the 14th and in the early 15th century.
The next, Rensiassance reconstruction of the castle was carried out during the reign of the Emperor Ferdinand I in the latter half of the 16th century. This is why the present appearance of the chateau is mixture of several reconstructions.
Only two interiors (the restored medieval chapel and neighbouring so-called family hall of King Jiří) in the whole chateau are now accessible to the public.
This square is the oldest part of the town. The Renaissance arcading amd colourful facades of the houses of the 16th and 17th centuries fell victim particularly to the fires in 1800 and in 1832. In 1993 the square gained a new, interesting appearance after a general reconstruction.
The statue is the work of Bohuslav Schnirch, which was made by unique way. Originally installed at the Jubilee and Ethnographical Exhibition in Prague and it was solemnly unveiled at Poděbrady in 1896.
It was raised in the square as a monument to the plaque which raged in the town in 1714.
It was built to replace the burned-out Town Hall building and served Town Hall purposes untill World War II.
It was built in 1444. and maintaned as a hospital by Kunhuta of Stenberk who was the first wife of King George of Podebrady.
One part of the exposition presents the primeval age, the natural features and medieval history of the Poděbrady region. A smaller part of the exposition is devoted to the history of balneology at Poděbrady.
The town is ideal for recreation thank to the carbonic mineral water (rich in magnesium and calcium) which attracts visitors since1908. Form 1926 (when the town became spa town) it is specialized in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and musculoskeletal problems, gaining famous also abroad.
