INTRODUCTION TO LIBEREC


The North Bohemian district town of Liberec is located in the valley between the Ještěd Ridge and the Jizera Mountains. The history of this town start in the time of merchant paths leading through this area. Liberec was gradually established as an open market settlement. During the 15th and 16th centuries this small settlement, first mentioned in 1352, gradually changed into a feudal town in 1577. The end of the 16th century brought exceptional development to the town.

In the second half of the 18th century the centre of Liberec consisted of houses in the classical style. The beginning of the 19th century is important of the textile industry which came together with the industrial architecture. This fact lead to the town independent status. At this time many representative edifices were built and Liberec used to be, after Prague, the second biggest town in Bohemia. There were three consulates, 50 textile factories, and 60 factories connected with the metal industry. There were also producing of RAF cars.

In this time Liberec offers many interesting places. In downtown the townhall built in neo-renaissance style and finished in 1893, the Theatre of František Xaver Šalda dating from 1893, a museum, chamber of commers and a building society from years 1901-02.

Liberec is also called "the town under Ještěd". The peak is 1012m high and is crowned by a modern tower which has become a dominant feature of the town. The project for this original construction was designed by the architect Karel Hubáček and awarded the prestigious Perret's prize. The Ještěd tower, which is also hotel and restaurant, was opened on 21. 9. 1973, and has become as a symbol of the town.

ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN

Liberec Zoo was found in 1919 and it is the oldest in the Czech Republic. It´s specialization is in breeding rare species of animals, which are critically endangered in the wild. One of this animals, the white tiger, is a true rarity and is a major attraction for visitors. Also there is the largest collection of birds of prey in Europe.

The Botanic Gardens was opened in year 1895. During a lot of reconstruction works has created and now are the most modern gardens in Bohemia.

The dominant of Liberec is the 1012-metre high. Ještěd Mountain is the remarkable place of a television transmission tower and mountain hotel. The designer of this building was architect Karel Hubáček, who was presented with the prestigious Perret Award for his work. In fact the building get many awards for its originality, for example it is a national cultural monument and the Building of the 20th Century. Newly is listed as an UNESCO monument.

The neo-Renaissance town hall was built between years 1888 and 1893.


LIBEREC CASTLE

This original renaissance castle was built by brothers Christopher and Melichar of Redern between 1582 and 1587 as one of the first stone buildings in the city. In the 20th century was established a unique glass sample room in the chateau, the delicate beauty of which led to the chateau being named the "Glass Chateau".

The Babylon centre is perfect location for family leisure time and the most important tourist attractions in the town. factory. The main tourist attraction of Babylon is Aquapark - the first in the Czech republic. There are a system of swimming pools, water tobogans, saunas, massage, steam baths, whirlpools, aquariums and outdoor terrace. There are also 3 restaurants in the Aquapark and the visitors can stay there the whole day. Among the other attractions of Babylon are Lunapark, many children ´s attractions (children´s corner, jungle gym)and the Shopping centre with more than 60 shops. Parents can leave their children to play in the inflatable children´s castle.
